According to a new book, a U.S. secret service agent accidently discharged a shotgun at Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in September 2006 outside the United Nations in New York. The book -- Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry -- claims the agent was adjusting the side-mounted shotgun on one of the Suburbans in then-president George W. Bush’s motorcade when the gun went off. The shot headed in the direction of Ahmadinejad as he was loading his motorcade. According to the book, a top-secret memo detailing the incident circulated among high-level White House officials. Those officials were concerned that Ahmadinejad might claim the U.S. tried to assassinate him. But he didn’t.
